Please meet Miss L - a very important new client. While I consider every single session I do an honor, this one was extra special. You see, her mom was a bridesmaid in the very first wedding I ever photographed. Somehow, my nearly-throwing-up nervousness must not have been too evident because she kept my card and called me to photograph her special day in May, 2009. She and her husband have stayed in touch and this year I got a text that a baby was on the way! I was so excited. So I really get all teary-eyed when I think of what it means that I was asked to photograph this precious child.

I felt like I was a little girl again playing dress-up dolls because mom and auntie brought enough clothes to open a specialty shop. We kept changing headbands and shoes and outfits and having the best time capturing these images.

I saw a lot of her handsome dad in her during the session, but while editing the photographs I could see more of her beautiful mom. Either way, she's going to be beautiful and loved. She's a very blessed little girl.

Not to mention, that she's the cutest little ASU Hornet I've ever seen.

Compton-Scroggins Wedding {Prattville, AL Wedding Photography}

There's never much time to blog in the busy fall portrait and wedding season, but I would be remiss if I didn't stop a moment to celebrate Melissa and Shannon's recent wedding. Buena Vista Mansion in Prattville, AL was the chosen site for this sweet fall ceremony.

Melissa not only had the most beautiful eyes I've ever seen, but she also had the sweetest disposition! She and her mother were both dreams-come-true for a wedding photographer!

Enjoy Saving Lives {Montgomery, AL Event Photography}

Sav-A-Life of Montgomery Inc. is a non-denominational Christian ministry promoting a culture of life, health, and morality. It is a ministry that has been near and dear to my heart for many years. I remember when it was formed approximately 25 years ago. What an honor to be asked to photograph this year's annual fund-raising banquet.

The speaker was Dr. Bruce Wilkinson. Nine of the board members were able to be present for the photo session prior to the event. Sadly, we couldn't get together the staff members because they were all so busy at the registration table.

Guin Nance, serving as the Board's Chairperson, opened the evening events. Susan Decker Bunce, Executive Director, introduced the speaker.

Dr. Wilkinson issued an amazing challenge ... give back to the Lord one child for every child He'd given you. He quoted research that found the average cost to a crisis pregnancy center to save one child from abortion is $1200. Yet, if I'm not mistaken, Sav-A-Life of Montgomery only had $2000 available for advertising last year. If each of us could pledge $1200 for each of our children and grandchildren, we could equip Sav-A-Life to save many more lives. The Lord used his words to open the hearts of many who were present. My prayer is that they will in turn share this challenge to friends who could not be present. What a work the Lord could do in Montgomery if all of us who say we believe in the sanctity of life would prayerfully consider supporting this wonderful ministry.

Many, many thanks to Sue Sizemore, Southern Exposures, and Diana Bunch for helping me photograph this event. Also a big "thank you" to my hubby who helped carry lights and bags.

It started like any other senior session on a too-hot September afternoon. Pretty girl. Pretty dress. Pretty background. ...

... and then out came the hot pink dress and the fun began. This sweet teenager and her mother were all about the artistic idea of putting the soft, silky pink dress against grunge and cement and I love the outcome!

We ended in the studio with some traditional backgrounds and I love these as well!

What a great way to remember your senior year! No plastic numbers here :)

My favorite portrait sessions are with teens and seniors. They don't cry.... you don't have to chase them around... they're just lots of fun. I had a particularly good time with this session as the senior being photographed brought along her 3 best friends. What a wonderful afternoon it turned out to be.

Most seniors don't like their school-sponsored sessions because they are so rushed. So we started the day with a few dressy shots in the special white senior dress.

But then they changed into some fun clothes and I had a great time walking them around downtown Montgomery for some unique casual captures.

We ended in the studio with a mixture of dressy and casual.

And here's my favorite of the session!

The nine-month session is my favorite! The sweet babies are full of personality but not super mobile! I had the pleasure of capturing this nine-month old recently in the studio. Her favorite thing to do was throw up her hand and say, "Hi!" I just loved it!

Another wonderful family I've come to know through photography.

And she did love the white wicker rocker ... just wouldn't sit in it :) I still love this series.

There is definitely one thing my photography pursuits have taught me: There are plenty of young men and women who make excellent parents and follow God's will for the family. Perfect example here. I was thrilled to meet handsome Mr. "G" and his parents recently at Shakespeare's Garden. It was an absolute blessing.

I'm afraid we often get a skewed view of life from television, news media and movies. The truth is that there are still wonderful people on earth, there is still hope for the family, and God still provides everything we need to enjoy life. Smith-Armayor Wedding {Montgomery, AL Wedding Photography}

The Smith-Armayor Wedding took place on a beautiful day in August. What a special honor for me to be included in their wedding celebration!

The preparations began many months before and every detail was planned with the utmost care.

The First Look took place in the beautiful courtyard of First Baptist Church in downtown Montgomery -- my favorite place for a first look!

The ceremony took place in one of Montgomery's landmarks - the old sanctuary of First Baptist Church.

Then the happy couple was off for a fun trolley adventure with their crazy wedding party while guests were moving to the reception.

The reception was at the Alley Station Ballroom.

Isn't this lighting gorgeous!!??!!

After a fun reception (too many great dance and friend shots to post!!) ....

...the newlyweds departed for their honeymoon.

The cutest little newborn came to the studio last week for her premier session. She was so cooperative I was able to capture in the first 20 minutes what usually takes 2 hours! I have been honored to work with some amazingly wonderful couples from Morningview Baptist Church in Montgomery (and their amazingly wonderful wedding coordinator, Joy Hicks) so I was thrilled to be able to add Amy & Blake to the wedding schedule for 2011. We met at the studio recently for their engagement session, and it was a blast from the get-go!

After a few formal shots in the studio, we headed to the streets for some fun.

I put Amy up against one of my favorite downtown Montgomery spots and told Blake to make his move. I love the way they played into the scene!

I cannot begin to tell you how happy I was to photograph a family session recently for a long-time friend. The only thing that bothers me is that after almost 30 years of friendship she still looks so young and beautiful. I am certainly very jealous.

I do love animal stories with happy endings. Sweet Gracie -- rescued from the streets in Prattville -- was a bit camera shy. She is fearful of almost everything and everybody but her "mom" and "dad."

Mom and I discussed photoshopping out the scars from her former life. We both agreed we should not. They are part of who she is - part of her story - a very real reminder of how far she has come as a result of being rescued and loved.

Skeeter has no scars, but she is also a rescue. She just confirmed my determination to get a lab one day. So beautiful and calm. So hard to believe that she would ever need to be rescued.

I really hope this blog post will encourage many of us with adult children to consider having an updated family photograph of our "new" family. As I edited these images I realized what an inspired idea that is!

Recently three of the prettiest girls I've ever had the pleasure of photographing walked into my studio. Okay, one of them "bounced" in :) Guess which one after you look through the preview. :)

Sorry, mom. I just had to post this one! It makes me smile.

And this one really shouldn't be in the "children's" category anymore ... as much as I'm sure mom and dad would like for her to be. I was so glad mom brought her along. We tend to photograph our children frequently when they're little, then let those teen years slip by us. We really shouldn't. I'm so happy mom and dad will have these to remember this time in her life.

I just love what we were able to capture for sweet mom and am so excited to blog this preview of her online gallery - which is uploading now.

Enjoy Sunset {Montgomery, AL Portrait Photography}

There's a beautiful little field near my house that is just perfect for sunset photographs. The problem is the mowers usually show up right when it's at its prime. I was able to take one of the granddaughters out there last night and here are a few of the images.

I loved the results so much I decided to offer some sunset mini-sessions until it dries up or is cut down. I can just picture an engaged couple here as well as a little boy in a cowboy hat. And, as shown, it's just perfect for little girls. I even think a maternity session would be beautiful. So here are the details:

20-30 minute session beginning promptly at 6:45 (if you're late you'll miss it)
6 edited images in an online gallery
prints may be ordered a la carte through the online gallery with 2-for-1 (2 prints of same image) for 30 days after the gallery is released
$50 plus tax ($55) payable on the day of the session

Lighting will only allow for one session per evening and no wardrobe changes.
I will have to confirm the session the day it is scheduled as I have no control over when the mowers will show up and it will be gone. Wear bug spray :)

Joshua proposed to Chelsea at the beautiful Overlook Park in downtown Montgomery. So that's where we met for the engagement session.

I'm really looking forward to photographing their wedding in 2012.

Sara was born today at 7:32 A.M. She weighed in at a petite 6 lbs. 8 oz. and 20in. After announcing her appearance with gusto she has been a calm, sweet girl all day.

Big Brother Elijah came to the hospital to visit. Mom & Dad have been using a doll at home to teach Elijah how to be a good big brother, so when asked where Baby Sara was he replied, "At home." I said, "No, Baby Sara is over there." Elijah insisted, "Baby Sara is at home." Then we pointed to Mimi holding Baby Sara and a stunned Elijah met his little sister for the first time. And you just can't plan for a reaction like this!! Please enjoy this serendipitous moment.

Jordy ♥ Ben {Montgomery, AL Engagement Portraits}

I can really tell a lot about a guy from the engagement session. And I can tell you, Ben is a keeper. He endured insane heat & humidity, and enjoyed lots of interaction with the Jordy's extended family during his e-session.

Of course, he's very blessed to have been accepted into such a loving family. Not only is his bride-to-be beautiful but very talented.

I'm so honored to be included in this special time in their lives.

The family land provided lots of beautiful places for backdrops, but this one had to be my favorite set of the day. The quilt was made by Jordy's great-grandmother.

Enjoy Downtown {Montgomery, AL Photographer}

I was downtown one evening this week waiting for a very special appointment. Not being one to sit and wait, I grabbed my camera and started looking at the little details we sometimes miss. I love looking for reflections, so grabbed a few of those.

Then I started thinking of different ways to capture the much-photographed fountain. I don't know if I stretched my imagination enough, but this was my favorite.

I also focused on these two details that I have loved - but not photographed - since I first started thinking about opening a studio downtown.

Here's a little teaser about the reason for the evening appointment downtown. Maybe more details will follow soon. ... but maybe not. We'll see :)

Rachel & Dale {Montgomery, AL Wedding Photography}

Rachel and Dale were married two weeks ago at Dalraida Baptist Church. It was a beautiful celebration for a wonderful couple.

Here are a few of my favorite images from the day:

I just fell in love with Rachel's sweet sister! What a doll!

The fun-filled reception was held at 129 Coosa - a great location for receptions, meetings and parties.

Ashlee Staggers was the floral designer and wedding director extraordinaire. She is the only wedding director I remember who actually thought to save me a parking place so I could get out of my car at the same time as the bride and groom were getting out of theirs! Thank you, Ashlee!!

Miss Rachel Gordon became Mrs. Dale Thomas yesterday in a beautiful celebration at Dalraida Baptist Church. It was such an honor to have been chosen to document this special day. This was her official bridal portrait on display at the reception which was held at 129 Coosa:

Rachel and I met at Jasmine Hill Gardens and Outdoor Museum in May, but these had to stay under wraps until her wedding day. Now I can show you some of my favorite bridal portrait images.

Brittany and John are a romantic couple who love the urban settings of downtown. All of their wedding events are planned for downtown Montgomery...

,

...so we thought it completely appropriate to do their e-session with an urban flair.

Brittany loves unique shots, cool angels and lighting and a little touch of grunge.

I think it's great when a client says, "Oh, can we do this?" And that's exactly what Brittany said as she jumped up onto the base of the water tower. Apparently, we can do this! LOL!

I also love it when clients point out things that interest them. Brittany and John were attracted to these windows. These ended up being some of my favorite captures of the day!

I think the 9-month session is my favorite in the baby's first year. They are interacting and sitting up and growing into their own little unique personalities. I had so much fun with this little sweetie when she came recently for her session. Mom had the cutest little outfit for her!

Enjoy Next Steps {Montgomery, AL Photography}

This is year 4 of a 5-year business plan I began, well, 4 years ago. I have tried to take each step cautiously and have been so blessed by this adventure called "being a photographer." I've checked off one of the big goals this year: passing the Professional Photographic Certification Commission requirements to be a Certified Professional Photographer (CPP).

Now, it's time for the next step.

Since April 16th plans have quickly been falling into place to open a studio. Today I signed a lease for a suite of offices in the Historic Bell Building in Downtown Montgomery. This is the main studio room, with beautiful natural lighting:

as proven by this picture taken earlier this week with no flash, no studio lights, and no color correction.

While I will continue to offer location photography, the studio will offer much needed space for rainy day (or 105-degree day) relocation as well as traditional studio photography. The suite offers additional space that will be dedicated to low-key photography, consultations, and a changing room. There will also be a seating area. And I have two wonderful associates who will be with me in this venture. When the vision comes together, it will be a lovely place to visit.

The location of the Historic Bell Building is within walking distance of beautiful locations for photography at the Riverfront Park, Alley Station area, and Union Station.

I'm very excited about the possibilities. I'm looking forward to posting samples of studio sessions in the next couple of weeks and really getting some hot summer introductory collections together for you :)

Hill-Ward Wedding {Montgomery, AL Wedding Photography}

Jessica and Danny were married in a beautiful celebration recently at First Baptist Church in Montgomery. Here are just a few of my favorite images from their special day.

After the beautiful ceremony, Jessica and Danny were off in style for their reception at Montgomery's Visitors Center at Union Station.

Instead of the traditional bride's cake, they had a yummy cupcake selection.

And this groom's cake was nothing short of phenomenal!

Although I totally agreed with Jessica's reaction to it:)

Jessica had some great ideas for the traditional reception events. Instead of throwing her bouquet, she gave it to the couple present who had been married the longest. She then asked them for their advice. Their wise reply was to always put Jesus first.

I have often wondered why we continue the garter and bouquet toss at weddings because it is so hard to get people to participate. Jessica had the perfect solution -- she had light-weight boxes with gift certificates inside and all the men and all the women were invited to try to catch it in turn. Talk about your crowd participation!!

After the fun-filled reception, Jessica and Danny exited in a flurry of flag-waving well wishers.

Enjoy Nashville

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Nashville, Tennessee. I stayed locked in my hotel room most of the time preparing for the professional photographer's certification test. After I got that behind me I enjoyed a couple of Nashville's beautiful parks. These are a few snaps from the Bicentennial Capitol Mall.

I couldn't resist a self-portrait in the 18,000 lb granite globe floating on 1/8 inch of water. It is part of the WWII Memorial. The lines from Tennessee show the mileage to different places connected to the war. Please note: the roundness of the globe makes me look larger than I really am ;)

This is a detail from the River Walk. There are 31 water fountains - one for each of the main waterways in Tennessee - and the granite wall with inscriptions about the waterways.

And the most delightful part of the visit ... the 95-bell carillon representing Tennessee's musical heritage. I was walking around the park and suddenly heard them ring out "Love Me Tender." It was beautiful. I tried to ask a tour guide how often that happened and he said only at 10:00. Not sure he understood my question. He was definitely not from Tennessee!

If I lived in Nashville I'd definitely be tempted to schedule a few portrait sessions here.

My cat is always waiting for me when I get home. He somehow knows the sound of the car and comes to meet me. (okay, he's not really my cat. he belongs to my neighbor. but he thinks he's our cat. maybe because we don't have 3 preschoolers and a pit bull. anyway ...)

Friday, he didn't come to meet me. I immediately noticed his absence but went on in the house. I waited a few minutes then checked at each door. Still no cat. I walked back to my office and did a little work but couldn't help but think how strange this was so headed to check the doors again.

Then, as I was passing the bedroom we keep set up for the grandchildren, I caught something out of the corner of my eye:

I did a double-take. Sure enough, there he was.

What was he thinking when he settled down here? Was he thinking he was part of the pride?

I was pleased he let me grab the camera and take a few shots of this. How funny is this!

Apple's Not-so-Smart iPad2 Cover

Warning ... this is not a pretty post!

This is the Apple iPad2 cover that cost me $359. "Why," you ask, "would you spend $359 for a cover that is advertised for $39?"

Well the answer is, "Because I believed Apple when they clearly stated on their site, 'The Smart Cover and iPad 2 were made for each other. Literally. Built-in magnets draw the SmartCover to iPad for a perfect fit that not only protects, but also wakes up, stands up, and brightens up your iPad. That’s not just smart. It’s genius.'"

But this is what happened the first time I dropped my iPad2:

The drop was so slight I didn't even open the cover to see if anything was wrong with it. I've dropped my cell phone with much greater force (cell phone is a blackberry, not an iPhone!).

Not only did the screen shatter, but look at the damage on the edges. It must be made of aluminum foil!!

So, I enjoyed my iPad2 for about a month, and then had to pay $320 to replace it (even though the computer part still worked fine) because it was "damaged beyond repair" !!! So, $39 for the Smart Cover that wasn't really such a smart idea after all, plus $320 for a replacement. And then the customer service rep says, "Is that satisfactory?"

If I wasn't afraid my grandchildren might see this post I'd use bad words to describe what I was thinking at that moment. "Well ... no that isn't satisfactory, but what else am I going to do!!! Really???

Throw $538 into the trash can or throw another $320 into Apple's coffers? Well, let's see...

Well, I can fault Apple for a horrible design, but I can't fault them for poor service after robbing me of another $320. I took the iPad to the UPS store on Monday morning and I had a new one back Wednesday morning. ... and it was charged to my credit card on Friday morning.

Needless to say I've ordered a strongbox to keep the new one in. I still haven't taken it out of the wrapper and won't until the new case - made by someone other than Apple - is delivered.

So, if you're ordering an iPad2 please skip the Smart Cover. It's really not so genius as they would lead you to believe.

Andrea & Jerome {Alabama Wedding Photography}

Andrea and Jerome got married on a perfect April day.

But shortly after, their hometown of Tuscaloosa was ravaged by tornadoes.

Such a brief time to celebrate.

Thankfully, they were spared, but the hurt still goes deep as the city works to recover and rebuild. So, I wanted this sneak peek of their wedding day to portray beauty ... the beauty of people, the beauty of love, the beauty of family, the beauty of life. And hope ... hope that they would soon be able to celebrate again.

One of the groomsmen wrote and delivered a beautiful poem extolling the importance of marriage.

Laura and Jason had a beautiful wedding celebration at First United Methodist Church in Montgomery, AL. The weather was gorgeous and the dogwoods and azaleas were in full bloom.

Carrie Pinckard of Wetumpka provided the beautiful floral designs.

The groomsmen were absolute nuts and kept us in stitches the entire day!

Laura and her bridesmaids - along with all the family members - were so courteous and cooperative. It was just a pleasure to capture these classic images for her in this absolute treasure of a church.

After being pronounced husband and wife, the newlyweds continued their celebration at the Capital City Club in downtown Montgomery.

The father-daughter dance was very special.

The images in their gallery will feature documentation of the traditional reception events along with captures of their friends and family enjoying their evening...

... as well as a special moment at sunset.

Laura and Jason ended the reception with a big "WWWWAAARRRR Eagle!"

and departed for their honeymoon with many special memories of their very special day!

How quickly the year passed! It seems like just a few weeks ago I received an inquiry from Carly's mom about the Baby's First Year plan and here she is at one!

We documented this important milestone recently at Jasmine Hill Gardens and Outdoor Museum. You can tell I love this place! It affords so many wonderful areas to use as backgrounds.

And while this is certainly not considered "good portraiture" I could not help but capture Carly's little inquisitive spirit as she peeked through the gate at me. Love those eyes!

Carly's sweet mom and grandmother helped make the session delightful. "KayKay" could always get Carly to smile ... especially when she danced :)

I'd already had the pleasure of meeting and photographing Putt and Chip through the local Easter Seals Dogs-on-Call Program. And now I've met their adopted sibling, Bogey. Can you guess what their mom loves to do?

Danielle and Josh were married in a beautiful celebration at Auburn United Methodist Church.

Danielle had carefully planned every detail of the wedding for months in advance. It was great to be able to watch it all come together with everyone having such a good time.

Laura's Wedding Day {Montgomery, AL Wedding Photography}

Yesterday, in a lovely ceremony at First United Methodist Church, Miss Laura Evans became Mrs. Jason Styslinger. That means I can finally release the amazing bridal portraits we took in February!

We met at The Elms of Coosada. It is a beautiful location in Central Alabama that provides ample time for bridal portraits, a changing room for the bride, and gorgeous areas indoors and outdoors to accommodate for Alabama's fickle weather.

Laura and her mom selected four of her favorites, which were printed as 8x10s and expertly matted and framed together to display at the reception.

While Laura and Jason are on their honeymoon I will be working away at their wedding images.

I felt like I'd truly "arrived" as a wedding photographer when I got a call from this beautiful young lady and she wanted to check my availability before finalizing her wedding date!! WOW! What an honor!!

We met for one of my favorite ever e-sessions at the beautiful Jasmine Hill Gardens and Outdoor Museum in Wetumpka. They are so gracious to open this beautiful location to photographers each year.

Rachel's ring is beautiful! And the wrought-iron gate reminded her of one at her grandmother's house. I did cheat a little. I told Rachel I was just taking photos of the hands. But when I glanced up and saw the emotion as she was looking at her ring and their hands I had to pull back with the lens and capture that moment.

We had beautiful late-afternoon lighting and pleasant weather.

Not to mention I felt like I was working with professional models! It is going to be so much fun to capture the special moments of their wedding day.

What a wonderful way to start a day: meeting sweet little Mary Mason and her family at Jasmine Hill to celebrate her 6 months milestone!

The flowers were beautiful and the lighting was perfect for our morning appointment.

Daddy was great at getting Mary Mason to smile and laugh.

And mom had everyone perfectly coordinated.

This is a very special family to me in many ways. I was so honored to be there with them on this day to celebrate their blessings.

Wynlakes Country Club provided the perfect venue for The Course of Hope Dinner and Auction 2011 to benefit MANE (Montgomery Area Nontraditional Equestrians). After an enjoyable golf tournament the guests moved into the silent auction area where many generous artists and businesses had donated services and products.

The silent auction was followed by a delicious steak dinner prepared and served by the excellent Wynlakes staff.

After a welcome speech by Mayor Strange and presentations of the awards to the tournament winners, everyone enjoyed the live auction led by Jack Granger of Granger Thagard from Birmingham, Al (www.gtauctions.com).

Everyone had a great time for a worthy cause. Funds raised at this event will assist the area special needs population, their families, pre-professionals learning to serve this population, MANE's horses, and MANE's volunteers.

We had this portrait session scheduled for a beautiful location. I got there (thankfully) ahead of the family as I always try to do. I like to walk the venue - make sure nothing has changed - check the lighting and the other people who may be there - plan out the session. Enter the security guard... "you can't photograph here." What? Seriously? I was just here 4 days ago!? Had a long conversation with the person in charge... Took some beautiful portraits... You're kidding, right? Wrong! Frantic phone call to the mom in route. "We've got to go somewhere else!" "Where?" "Shakespeare's Garden or Huntingdon College?" "Shakespeare's Garden." Mom took it better than I did. I hate disappointing clients.

But all's well that ends well, right? And this ended well, I think:

The daffodils were in full bloom - but I promise I didn't let them pick these. I brought these from home.

And these two sweeties are an instant party!

"Here, sis, let me fix that bow for you."

I love, love, love to hear a mom say I was able to capture the child's personality during a session. And we did here. Can't you see it in those eyes?!?

Wow! What a treat! Can't wait to see what their cake-smashing first birthday portrait session yields :D

Enjoy Smoothies

I do not like fruit. I know it's good for you, but I just don't like it.

Last year my son and daughter-in-law introduced me to Smoothies. YUM. Finally a way I could eat fruit. But who could drive out to the smoothie store each day?

My daughter showed me the secret to making them. YUM again. But I soon tired of dragging the blender out of the cabinet and washing it out after I'd finished.

Enter the Magic Bullet!!! I got one for my birthday and now I have a fruit smoothie every day for breakfast.

Here's the way I do it:

I chop 1/2 banana in first. It can be fresh or frozen (Banana skins turn brown in the freezer but the fruit inside doesn't. If I use a frozen banana I just take the peeling off with a knife and chop it frozen into the container.)

Add any frozen fruit to fill the container about 2/3 full. The key is frozen. It doesn't matter if you add one fruit or 4 different ones. My favorites are peaches, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. I honestly haven't ventured beyond these four.

Almost cover the fruit with Vanilla Soymilk - my personal favorite is Soy Slender.

What To Wear 2 {Montgomery, AL Photography}

Another installment in the "What to Wear" section. I hope these suggestions will give you a good starting place for planning your spring family portrait sessions.

One of my goals for 2011 is to pass a certification process through the Professional Photographic Certification Commission. It consists of two parts -- written exam and image submission. I submitted my images for review in February and received a letter of congratulations for passing the review today! YAY! I like my images ... but validation is certainly nice :)

The requirements were to submit 20 images that represented your body of work. They had to reflect your business. So, I submitted half of the images from my portrait sessions and half from weddings. They had to come from 20 different clients. The judges were looking for technique -- lighting, color balance, exposure, etc.

Some of my portraits are "studio" style, so I submitted the following images to reflect that portion of my work.

The majority of my portrait sessions are on-location so I selected seven images to reflect that portion of my business:

I made sure to include several different ages.

The wedding selections included engagement, bridal and wedding day:

Wedding-day images were to include a mixture of formal and candid.

I was particularly pleased that my black-and-white images passed the review. I'd heard they were particularly picky about those. But I love b & w images so I wanted to include them.

So I am super excited this evening and now need to start studying for the written portion of the exam. I don't remember the last time I had to pass a written exam!! I'm so not looking forward to that! I will have to travel out-of-state later in the year to take the exam and complete the certification process.

So, thank you to my wonderful clients for providing me with such gorgeous images to submit!! And thank you to anyone who has actually finished reading this blog post and allowed me a little time to bask in the accomplishment.

Enjoy Evan {9 months}

Precious Evan and sweet big sister Chloe were so cooperative and fun to photograph in our recent 9-month session. I think after about 20-30 minutes I stopped and told mom and dad we'd gotten plenty ... and I mean plenty ... of great images.

We went early in the day while the light was yummy and the kids were rested and happy. Mom and Dad were great assistance ... maybe because mom is a photographer herself and knows a key component to a successful session is calm parents.

I mean, seriously, it just doesn't get any cuter than this!

Dad serves our city on the MPD, so this little smocked outfit was a perfect addition to the session!

It's hard to realize that my next session with Evan will be for his first birthday!! It seems like just a few months ago I was scheduling his newborn session! What a blessing it has been to get to know this wonderful family.

Jessica ♥ Danny {Birmingham AL Engagement}

It is always so special when a client recommends me to a family member. And that is exactly how I came to know Jessica and Danny. (Thank you, Shay!)

Danny is a football coach, so we had to incorporate that into the session! I always love it when couples bring items that make the session unique to them.

Their wedding will be in Montgomery this summer, but they both live and work in Birmingham. So Jessica found us the perfect location there to do some fun and beautiful sunset engagement portraits.

The day was beautiful, the location was unique, the couple was fun, and I'm thrilled with what we were able to capture for them.

Rachel ♥ Blake {Montgomery AL Engagement Sessions}

Sweet Rachel went to high school and college with one of my sons and babysat my granddaughters for the other one. She has always been a special person to us. And now she's getting married!

I was already booked when she and fiance Blake selected their wedding date, but I still had the honor of doing their engagement session.

We chose The Elms of Coosada for the location because you can never trust the February weather in Alabama! Trust me, I've arrived at that conclusion the hard way! But it turned out to be a beautiful day! So while we captured some of the more formal portraits indoors ...

...we were able to move outdoors to get some casual images.

Congratulations to Blake for the Lord's blessing in leading him to Rachel! And best wishes to Rachel! I hope you both enjoy sharing this sneak peek with friends and family while your full gallery of images is uploading.

Alaura and Chris {Montgomery AL Wedding Photography}

I was so honored to photograph Alaura and Chris's recent wedding celebration. February is always unpredictable in the south, but the day turned out to be beautiful. The ceremony and reception were held at the beautiful Morningview Baptist Church in Montgomery. Their full gallery of images is uploading tonight, so this is just a little sneak peek to share with friends and family until they're ready to view.

Here's another entry in the "Things I should get rid of but don't have the heart to" theme for this week.

This humongous, gaudy pink and yellow bear has lived with us for over 20 years now. We took our (then) little children to Six Flags one year and my husband - wanting to show he was the Icandoanything Daddy - won this for our daughter. I cannot tell you how many times I've drug him into the living room and declared that I was giving him away (the bear - not the husband .... although I've probably declared that a time or two also), only to return him to storage. I took him out today and let him enjoy the sun. Then drug him back into the bedroom where we keep the toys for the grandchildren.

How could I resist those pleading eyes?

I have been on a quest this year to take a photo each day. It has been a great learning experience. The more you practice with any instrument the better you get -- true for cameras, too. So far I have not pulled from client sessions - I've focused more on family and still life (although nothing about my family is close to "still"). I've tried to have a theme each week. I haven't been blogging these but do have a FB album of what I've taken thus far if anyone is interested. However, I decided to blog today's capture ... the explanation was too long for a FB comment.

The theme I've chosen for this week is "Things I should get rid of but don't have the heart to." And here's my image for today:

I spent my preschool years on a short street with few houses in a small town. Everyone was a good neighbor. If mom had to run to the grocery store - which was in another town ... actually across a state line! - she could leave me with anyone on the street. They were all part of my family.

Directly across from us lived a retired baker and his wife. His name was Mr. Pickens, but I called him "Mr. Pick." He made my birthday cakes each year until we moved away. But it's not the birthday cakes I remember ... it's the orange rolls. I can still "taste" them today when I think of Mr. Pick. And I've never found any that compare. His name will always be associated with the taste of orange.

Mr. and Mrs. Pick didn't have any children, so when he died his wife gave his pastry set to my mom. When she died I could not bear to throw them away. They will never be of use to anyone -- too outdated and rusted. They have no value to anyone -- I'm probably the last living person who even remembers him. So they will end up in a landfill one day. I will, with some guilt for not having taken care of it myself, leave these for my children to dispose of at some point in the future. At least now they'll know why I couldn't do it.

In some ways this is sad ... to think that memories of Mr. Pick may end with me. In other ways it is joyful ... I was blessed enough to have this influence in my life and have such wonderful memories to cherish.

Ah, this may prove to be a bittersweet week of photos!

Enjoy Pink

Many years ago -- seems like so few -- when my dad died and my mom sold the house, I found a good supply of depression glass packed away. I immediately fell in love with it and have spent many hours perusing antique stores trying to complete several partial sets.

I loved these little pink cups and berry bowls, but had difficulty finding any matching pieces. My daughter - being the artist that she is - had the idea to finish the set with any dishes that had pink flowers in them ... but each plate had to be unique. We went to several antique stores in Montgomery on our quest.

I pulled in this little bowl from my maternal grandmother...

...and this little dish from my mother-in-law that I'm sure was made as a vanity tray.

And now it is a family tradition to use this set each February. And I do love them.

Mainly because they remind me of special time spent with my sweet daughter.

Life brings simple pleasures to us every day. It is up to us to make them wonderful memories. -Cathy Allen

Enjoy Float Wraps {Montgomery, AL Family Photography}

I was so proud to be able to present this beautiful canvas float wrap enlargement to a wonderful, patriotic family last weekend.

If you're not familiar with float-wraps, here are a few details. The image is printed on the medium of choice -- in this case it is canvas -- and is wrapped around to the back of the board. It is then finished with a piece for hanging which suspends it out from the wall a tad for added impact.

What an honor to be chosen to photograph this special occasion! Many thanks to this family and many others that are serving our great country.

Enjoy Haven {3 months}

What a great way to get back in the swing of things after being off for a month after surgery! Sweet Haven and her parents met me at Southern Homes & Gardens on Vaughn Road Saturday morning. As always, they had everything set up beautifully as if it had been done just for us and welcomed us with open arms. I've said it before on this blog: SH&G is a wonderful asset to Montgomery!

Haven is such a little doll! She was so cooperative and fun to play with.

And I guess I shouldn't be surprised with such a special mom and dad. What a sweet family.

She did get a little tired of us changing and posing her towards the end of the session. But this little pouty lip has got to be one of my favorite ever captures! Doesn't it just make you smile?

She did let us finish the session with a last photo of her in an heirloom dress of her mom's. I just love this in classic black & white.

These are a few from a Christmas session that did not make it to the blog in the pre-Christmas rush, but this little fellow is so stinking handsome I just had to go ahead and post them when I ran across them tonight.

I loved.loved.loved these of him giving his pretty mom a kiss.

I'd love to say I could go back and blog all the Christmas sessions, but am just not sure I'd be able to follow through. I'll be returning to a rather full photography schedule next week - for which I'm very thankful!

Misses a and a were delightful during their 6-month session.

And mom always has them dressed in such precious outfits! I don't know how she does it!

And Huntingdon College always provides a beautiful backdrop of architecture and flora.

And Daddy is so funny and makes all three laugh with delight.

Enjoy Time with Family

2010 was a blessed year for my photography business. In spite of the recession and economic uncertainty, I did more weddings and portrait sessions than I would have ever dreamed. As I reflect back on 2010 clients, I feel so honored and blessed to have been chosen to document such special occasions and milestones. However, my family and friends paid a price for this success. I missed times and opportunities that cannot be recaptured. After reading Anne's blog I wrote the above quote on a sticky note and put it on my booking calendar. I have resolved to not only spend more time with family and friends, but to savor and enjoy it greatly!

Grandson Elijah spent some time with us yesterday playing basketball, coloring, and putting together puzzles. I loved watching the interaction between Elijah and his "G" and hearing (repeatedly) "Where does this one go?"

Granddaughter Haylie spent the night with us Saturday. On our way back to her house on Sunday we stopped to feed the birds at Shakespeare.

The answer to my dilemma appears to be the standard economic wisdom of supply and demand. I will be greatly limiting the number of weddings and portraits booked in 2011, which will require an adjustment in the required investment. Wedding collections for 2011 have been finalized and are in effect for any bride who has not yet reserved a date for her wedding. I'm working on 2011 portrait collections this week. They should be in effect by the end of the week. So, if you're thinking you'd like to book a session this year, please go ahead and contact me this week. I have a few openings in March, none in February or April, and some weekday openings in May (all weekends are booked).

Let's all take time to enjoy family and friends in 2011!
